Thirty-five uniques stories of relationships between women of all ages and circumstances. These focused first-person vignettes each emphasize a specific experience in a woman's life where she sees, does, reacts to, or causes in an emotional event between two or more women.
The author's vivid storytelling shows the ups and downs, the benefits and challenges, of the full range of same-gender relationships. No two stories are alike, revealing a different time, setting, and ensemble of characters. Wow!
The author's skillfully portrays each account with different voices, tones, personalities, and emotional intricacies, making this collection an interesting study of the realities known through these deep and often intense relationships.
Even the story formatting changes from story to story, creating an interesting perspective of the female psyche and its varied expressions. Better understood and appreciated by more mature audiences, these fictional accounts reflect a more believable reality, especially in those with a darker tone. It would not surprise me if many or all stories had truthful origins.
I did not especially like the long paragraph format of most stories, which might be more appealing to readers by breaking up the paragraphs to add value, especially to those written with a stream-of-consciousness format.
I suggest taking several moments between stories to fully grasp and absorb the author's intentions and possible interpretations. This extra time also prevents unintentionally linking together two or more stories when none are related.
This book was recommended by a colleague who read the Portuguese original version. Although the translation was excellent, there were times I felt I was missing several nuances and idioms not transportable into English.
I appreciated the well-narrated Audible supplement that added value to my reading enjoyment.
I look forward to reading more by this author on one of her other people-focused works.
